I survived

Well, my Thanksgiving was like a scene from an awkward dark comedy. The n-bomb was dropped, ignorance was all around, and I'm pretty sure I was almost thrown out of the house because I didn't immediately agree with all the outrageous political statements being made. I was a very good girl, though, because all I said in response to this shit show was that I don't discuss politics on holidays and that since it's Thanksgiving we should all give it a rest.

Of note, though, is the fact that the boy did not stand up for me. He was very embarrassed and upset, and I imagine a little ashamed of his family, but he didn't speak up to put a stop to it. Not sure what to think of that. I guess it was just as awkward for him as it was for me and I should cut him a break.

The good news is that his mom likes me. I guess that counts for something.

Ah well. Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving, for those who celebrate it...and happy weekend to everyone else!

This worries me

I firmly believe in living by this quote:

"The key is to keep company only with those who uplift you, whose presence calls forth your best." ~Epictetus

I've been dating a great guy officially for about 5 months, and unofficially seeing him for almost a year. In all this time we have never met each other's families. This is fine, no big deal, except that on Thursday I'm going to his family's Thanksgiving gathering and he just dropped the bomb on me that I may encounter 'the n-word' at the dinner table.

I have a feeling that his family will neither uplift me, nor call forth my best.

Sigh.

Amusing meme

Stolen from [info]dynonugget !

Go to Urban Dictionary and look up your real answers to find the crazy answers!

1.) Your name? Andrea

Andrea comes from the Latin meaning "Womanly" or "Beautiful Lady". She is steadfast and confident, honest and reliable. A tower of strength for those she cares for and a rock to the family.

2.) Your age? 25

1. The age at which one can finally rent a car in the United States without being charged enormous amounts of money and without having to sign thousands of papers for that matter.

2. Lysergic Acid Diethylamide-25. aka LSD, acid

3.) One of your friends? Marianne

The girl you always want to get with, but never seem to meet her standards. She is a tease, and keeps you wanting more. If you do end up with her (LUCKY BASTARD), she is an amazing kisser. This girl dreams big, and knows what she wants. (LoL - this is accurate)

4.) What should you be doing? Cleaning

(v) The act of shoving everything in a closet and calling it decent.

5.) Favorite color? Purple

1. Extremely potent marijuana, specifically marijuana buds that have a purple hue to them. Also accompanied by a fragrant, usually fruity smell and mad perma-grin.

2. Irrefutably the best color in the world. End of story, period. This period signifies the end >.

6.) Birthplace? Manalapan, NJ

A town that was once full of cornfields, but is now full of assholes. (oh, so true! lol)

7.) Month of your birth? December

1. The month in which the hottest women are born.

2. An excellent time of year where the snow is beautiful, the weather is cold, and the closer you get to the end of the month the more your birthday sucks. (Amen to that.)

8.) Last person you talked to? Polli (roommate #1)

1. Polly is a abbr. of a Polly Pocket. She is so small and cute you can fit her into your pocket and take her with you wherever you go. (basically true since my roommate is 5' on a good day, and I could probably fit her in a suitcase. I skipped all the definitions of roommate because they are all really mean and Polli is a good roommate. It's the OTHER roommate (#2) that fits those definitions.)

9.) One of your nicknames? Spilly Magee

Spilly Magee isn't defined yet.

Question of the day

So, let's say I created a document that is going to be part of an upcoming chapter of a certain story. Does anyone know how I can insert this and get it to display as if the character is reading a separate piece of paper, rather than just having it look like the story paragraphs? (does this question even make sense?) I guess I mean that the reader will see the document as the character is seeing it, rather than me just typing what it says. I know some of you have inserted pictures into stories before and I'm wondering if I can do something similar.

Any advice?

Ouch

Well, the exam is over. I have no idea how I did. I have to wait until December 1 to find out, so until then, it's being pushed into a neat little corner of my mind reserved for things I'd rather not think about.

After the exam I went for a massage. I told my massage therapist to focus on the middle back and shoulders since I carry a hell of a lot of tension (and the weight of my rack) there. Well, focus she did. I am sore as hell and wouldn't be surprised if there are bruises tomorrow. It was relaxing, but damn - my poor rhomboids.

Anyway, you guys know what this means...no more studying, i.e., I can write again! :D

You know what's really annoying?

Having to study/memorize information about an area of your job that you will most likely never go into.  I will never work in early intervention (children 0-5), but I still have to know minutiae of child development.  Such as, at what age can a child use a pincer grasp to pick up a raisin and put it into a container?

My answer: WHO CARES.

Sadly that is not an option on the exam.

argh

I really apologize to everyone, I have been studying for my board exams and really haven't been able to do much writing at all.  It's been a little hellish.  And of course I have to work tomorrow, but I managed to talk them into giving me Friday the 13th (dun dun dun) off so I can be a complete basket case in the privacy of my own home. :)

Fortunately for all involved, the test is done with as of 1 pm November 14.  After that I might have some time to actually write something more than a drabble here and there.  Thanks for your patience.

trance shows and ficlets

Well, hello, everyone.  I am still alive post-Armin.  This is a small miracle considering the show was way oversold and the main dance floor was most definitely a fire hazard.

Not being able to actually dance kind of cut down on my enjoyment.  That's what I went for, not to stand immobile in a sea of sweaty people.  My friend and I ended up having to go to a different floor/room of the club just to find some space.  We couldn't see Armin, but his set was playing there, too, so it didn't matter too much.  Once we were able to move and weren't constantly being elbowed and shoved, we were able to have a good time.

I am kind of angry, though, that the event was so mismanaged.  A lot of it ended up feeling like a hassle, and that isn't what I wanted considering we: a)drove 3 hours to get to it, b)paid for a hotel room, c)went out in the absolutely AWFUL weather.  Seriously, it was a Nor'easter, and if you're not familiar with what that is, be grateful.

Did I mention I also have a head cold and probably should have been in bed instead of out dancing?

And don't even get me started about the men encountered at this event.  I don't mind dancing with a guy, but I DO mind being dry-humped!  Someday I wish I could stick a banana in my pants and do to a guy what they do to women on the dance floor!  Good grief!  One guy actually had the audacity to grab my hand and try to put it down his pants!  NO THANK YOU.  Shockingly, I don't go to dance events to give hand jobs to strange men. -_-;

I'm glad we went and I did have a good time in spite of it all.  It just wasn't the transcendent/religious experience we were anticipating.  Not Armin's fault, but I would think twice about seeing him again, at least at that same venue.  He's obviously a bigger draw than they can handle, especially in a very diverse place like Washington, DC, where people actually know about trance.

On a different note, however, this miserable, moody weather inspired the muse to write an interesting ficlet.  It's not done yet, but hopefully I'll finish it tonight if I don't fall asleep.  I took a nap earlier so chances are good. :)  I'm not sure what you guys will think of it, but the plot bunny could not be denied.

More to come later...

And in other news, I hate my basement.  Every time I go down there to do laundry I have to take a damn Claritin about 20 minutes later.  Coincidence?  I think not. *coughs*

The flu shot is evil

So, my job made it mandatory for all staff to get the regular flu "vaccine" as well as the H1N1 when it comes out.

I have never seen the point of a flu "vaccine" because it's a VIRUS.  It mutates into a new strain regardless of what you do.  You will probably get it anyway.  I agree with it for children, the elderly, and the immunocompromised, because their immune systems aren't always up to par and they are in general more frail or more susceptible to serious illness...but for people like me, there is no point.

I do understand why they want health care workers to get it.  Patients can give it to us, or we can give it to them, and neither is a desirable outcome.  So, for this reason, I decided not to make a fuss and just get it even though I don't agree with it.

Never going to consent to it again.  First of all, that shot HURTS.  Think tetanus shot, only worse.  You will have a sore arm for 2-3 days afterwards.  Second of all, IT GAVE ME A 24 HOUR FLU.  I got the shot at 7:45 am.  By noon my throat was sore and scratchy.  By 2 my nose was stuffed up.  By 3 pm my entire body was aching.  By 4 I had a fever of 101.  By 5 I could barely sit up.  I then slept from 5 pm to 5:45 am the next day.

It was basically an extremely miserable experience.  I Nyquil'd the hell out of myself in the hopes that when I woke up, I would be better, and fortunately I was.  I still felt some residual body aches and exhaustion, as well as some congestion and throat scratchyness, but I could function.

In the long term, I guess it is better to have a 24 hour flu than a 7 day flu, except that without the shot I may never have gotten the flu at all.  And I guarantee you that now that I've gotten the "vaccine", I will get a flu this winter ANYWAY.  That's just how my life works.

So, when the H1N1 vaccine arrives in a few weeks, shiny and new and most likely rushed through by the FDA, I guess I should prepare myself for another mini-flu.

Can't they just make this crap like chicken pox, and say the best way to become immune to it is to get it?

Swine flu party at my house.  Let's get immune, baby.

C&R #10

I did beat my muse into submission for a bit of writing this weekend. I know it's not the one most of you want updated, but it's something. It means the muse is slowly clawing her way back into the picture

Oddly, I think when things go TOO smoothly in my life, the muse gets lazy. I need a bit of drama to get her going. Le sigh. Let's just say the drama was provided and now I'm back on form, though still working with less time than I was before, so productivity won't be what it was this summer. (Please hold back your exclamations of 'Productivity? She calls THAT productivity?')

On another note, in twelve days I am going to go to Washington, D.C. and dance to Armin van Buuren for 6 hours. AND I AM SO EXCITED. I may also see Tiesto in that same week, so if I evaporate into a cloud of euphoric sparkly vapor...I'll rain back down into a person eventually.

Without further ado, here are some links.

I've been MIA

and I apologize for that.  I started my new job (the fruits of my grad school labor) 3 weeks ago and it's pretty much been absorbing my time and energy exclusively.  I'm starting to get used to things now and I hope that my muse will assert herself soon.

I want to be one of those fabulous people who can work, go to the gym, cook dinner, enjoy 3 hours of productive leisure time, and still magically get enough sleep and juggle a boyfriend and a social life.  So far I've managed the working and the cooking, lol.

I'm hoping to give the muse a good workout this weekend.  Thanks for being patient in the meantime!

O_o

I think I've finally solidified an idea for my first original novel.  Of course, it's just an idea, but it keeps fermenting in my mind and expanding itself, and I can see the characters so clearly.  I think it has potential if I can reel in everything I want to do and form it into a coherent, meaningful plot.

So, why do I feel like I want to throw up and/or have an anxiety attack whenever I write bits of it or do a little research necessary for the plot?  Anyone?  Anyone?

I feel like a headcase.  Perhaps I will retreat to the safer territory of fanfiction for the rest of the night.

SHINYYY

Ok, this was the last week of Harry/Hermione month at [info]dyno_drabbles  and I won another shiny. :)

Drabble had to be inspired by this picture:

I took more inspiration from the pose than the clothing or the background, as you'll see.

I did enjoy writing the Harry/Hermione ship, but I didn't feel inspired to start a long, epic piece.  That's probably a good thing.  It would require a lot of emotional complexity and a deserving plot and I'm split so many ways right now with my other WIPs that I don't think I have it in me. @_@

Indecisive

There are plenty of things I could be doing.  And in my defense, I did clean my room already.  But now I am feeling like doing nothing, when in fact I have the following choices of things to do (that probably should be done sooner rather than later):

1. Write my dyno_drabble
2. Work on the new chapter of HTC some more
3. Do my laundry which room cleaning yielded
4. Study for my exam
5. Go grocery shopping

Instead I opt to sit on the computer, consider where I want to go for Restaurant Week in September, and order pizza because it is too f@$!ing hot to cook.  May possibly go watch pointless shows on HGTV as is weekend tradition in this house.

I think it's because I am realizing that my temporary license is probably going to be approved within a week or two, and that means I have to start working.  Instinctively I know my summer is about over.  That makes me want to be as lazy as possible.

And mother of pearl, I really need to start studying for the as-yet-unscheduled exam.  Blah.  I am not eager to begin the re-cramming of two years' worth of occupational therapy education BACK into my brain.  I can't believe it's only been about 6 weeks since I finished.  Mayjah time warp.

I promise later tonight I will write, and hopefully that will cure my case of the blahs.
